They say that the explorer Hernán Cortés, when he encountered new lands, could not help but think that he had arrived in the paradise described by Rodríguez de Montalvo in his novel Las sergas de Esplandián. In it, a strong and beautiful queen ruled an army of warriors on an island filled with gold and riches. The illusion was shattered as soon as it was discovered that it was not an island, but it was too late: the baptism had already taken place and the name of the place had already taken deep roots, whose rhizomes still nourish the maps of the world today. It is California, the land of Calafia, queen of cliffs and mountains, of valleys and deserts, of readers' hearts and, now, of linen and velvet.
