I don't know anymore which memories are memories and which ones are just stagings of what we have been told. So many times I have been told that when I was a baby my grandfather, to put me to sleep, used to carry me in his arms to my grandmother's Limoges china cabinets! That, although I know that one hardly treasures memories from so early in life, I swear I can feel him slapping me cheek to cheek, as if we were dancing a waltz, telling me the story of the little French monk-spy who brought the secret of Chinese porcelain to Europe: In the early 18th century a French Jesuit monk living in China studied in depth the secrets of his exquisite porcelain, the alchemy of water, fire and earth, and passed the information in detailed letters to his native France. Indispensable to the equation seemed to be the use of white clay, something the French did not have. When in 1767 a deposit of kaolin, the longed-for white clay, was discovered in Saint Yrieix la Perche, near Limoges, the rich history of French porcelain par excellence began.

And as I loved to listen to him, and I did not fall asleep, he would tell me the fables of each of the dishes displayed in the showcase. Today he would tell me the story of a Leopard, a zebra and an African crane in an oasis of palm trees, and I would close my eyes, purring like a cat, and fall asleep feeling his voice again.
