The winter of canvases
THE WINTER OF CANVASES
There is a palace in a small village in the Empordá that serves as a canvas for the canvases.
It is a space of white walls and stone structure, vaulted ceilings and terracotta floors, which dresses and undresses with art according to the season, and which has seen so much history pass through its skeleton, that it is limited to observe and feel, with the ancient and calm breath of a wise mythological animal.
Under that roof, and those walls used to pamper the most beautiful expressions of creativity, Manuela dreamed of the rooms where she could spend a few serene days with the arrival of autumn, and the old and worn out walls let themselves be fluffed by the novelty.
Manuela dreamed of a bright morning among blue striped linens that transported her back to her grandparents' house when summer had already left and the short days preluded the first lighting of the fireplace. The new striped collection is a tribute to the cotton mattresses that tucked them in while listening to tales and travel stories.
She also dreamed of a family reunion with grandmother's favorite tablecloths, and all the transparent glassware like a delicate visual melody against the light. Outside, the tramontana, inside the family making memories and warmth. And while the elders sipped coffee and a glass of Cognac lying on the cushions of the large living room sofa, caressed by a liquid and waning light, she imagined her nap among mauve embroidery and fluffy cushions like the little sheep that cross the fence when she counts them before falling fast asleep in the dream within her dream.
The cowbells of the cows are heard passing by parsimonious and arrhythmic as the afternoon comes to an end. The Palau de Casavells wakes up from Manuela's dream and gradually sheds its linen and blue stripes. It becomes again a blank canvas for the next trip that will transport her again to an unknown world.
Thank you so much Alzueta-Posse family for letting us invade your spaces like a gust of sea air. It has been enormously inspiring.
